Dog Bowls: A Simple Buying Guide
It is all too easy to feed your pet dog from a dog food container but that would be less than satisfactory as it would not do your pet any good. Instead, why not purchase a good dog bowl that must of course be large enough and which should only be used for his food. A separate bowl needs to be purchased for your dog to drink water from. It only requires that you look for a dog bowl that is well constructed (preferably from pet friendly materials) and which has enough features to ensure that your dog enjoys his meals. The right dog bowl ensures comfortable meals for your pet and money saving for you in the long term.
Size Counts
In regard to your dog’s water bowl makes sure that it is large enough to hold a quart of water while the dog bowl for his food must be able to contain a minimum of two cups of dry food. At the very least, you must ensure buying a bowl that is large enough to hold the amount of food that will keep your pet well fed and happy. As for choosing a bowl for your puppy you need to ensure looking at it from the long term and so choosing a puppy’s adult size dog bowl is recommended.
Stainless steel dog bowls should be your first preference and they need to also have a few features such as is heavy enough to prevent the food from spilling over and the bottom should be skid proof. These dog bowls are easier to clean and they can’t be chewed up by your pet and they also do not break.
It is better to avoid plastic dog bowls since these can develop edges that might jag or splinter in case your pet chews on them and they can also cause dog allergies from the pigment used in the plastic. Ceramic dog dishes will break all too easily and they are also very prone to allowing germs to grow and so require extensive cleaning and in case the ceramic bowl has been imported into the US there is also the risk that they contain lead as too toxic substances.
You need to also ensure buying the dog bowl according to the characteristics of your dog and it also pays to look for those dog bowls that are especially made for certain dog breeds. A dog bowl that has tapering sides helps prevent a dog’s long ears from getting into the bowl while an elevated dog bowl makes it easier for a larger sized dog to eat his food and it is also very useful for senior dogs that might be suffering from arthritis or even problems with mobility.
It also pays to select a dog bowl that prevents your dog from devouring his food down in double quick time. Choosing the Brake Fast dog bowl is recommended as it prevents your dog from eating too fast. You might also want to look at a heated water bowl which is useful for those dogs that have to spend much of their time outside the confines of your home and in winter time such bowls are especially useful.
As long as you follow these guidelines you can, even if you are planning on buying raised dog bowls or other kinds of dog bowls, settle on the right choice and so ensure that your pet eats comfortably without at the same time eating too fast for his own good. |
